Itero is a fantastic piece of kit and a real game changer when it comes to taking dental impressions. Before we go into Itero, lets answer a question you may have:

What Are Dental Impressions?

When we need to build up, restore, replace or straighten teeth, we need to create a mould of your teeth which can then be used for:

  • Crowns
  • Bridges
  • Dentures
  • Implant work
  • Teeth whitening trays
  • Aligners/braces
  • etc

Impressions form a fundamental part of our treatment plans and enable us to give you your smile back. It’s really important to take an accurate impression of your mouth as the lab work is subsequently then created off the back of it. So as you can imagine, if the impressions are not accurate, the new crown or bridge etc may not fit as well as it should – requiring additional work to get it fitting right or even a new impression to be taken – delaying the overall treatment plan for you.

The traditional method is known as analogue impressions which utilises a putty that is placed around your teeth, which then sets, is carefully removed once its hard, and then sent off to the dental laboratory for the work to be made. The process of these types of impression can take around 10-15 minutes including the prep time for the dental putty. This is where Itero comes into play, allowing for digital impressions.

What Are Digital Impressions?

We can take a scan of your teeth using the Itero handpiece, which then appears digitally on the screen. These scans can be completed in as quickly as 2-3 minutes and doesn’t require any preparation time.

Now, what this type of scan allows us to do next, is where it really starts to become a game changer. We can run a smile simulation to show you what your teeth could look like, if you went ahead with Invisalign. So if you are in two minds about straightening your teeth, you can now see what the end results are before even accepting your treatment plan! We have found this feature to be extremely popular with our patients and would be happy to do a scan of your teeth to show you what your new smile could look like!

The other really important feature (not to be overlooked), is the fact we no longer need to send the analogue impressions (once set) to the dental laboratories via a courier. This means once we have taken the scan and are happy with it. We can send it with a couple of clicks rather than having to arrange and wait for a collection. Depending on the time of the scan, they will either come that day or the following day or even after the weekend if taken late on a Friday. By improving the speed that the scan can get to the lab, it will inevitably speed up the turnaround time we can get the lab work back for you!

Digital dentistry has come on in leaps and bounds over the years, and we are pleased to be able to offer this enhanced service to our new & existing patients.
